Hot stamping foil is intensively used in printing and packaging industry, like graphic industry, textile industry, security applications, and etc. Typical decorative applications of hot stamp foils include greeting cards, book covers and packaging media, such as labels and folding cartons, wood, leather, textile, etc. Transfer foils can also be found embellishing writing instruments, cellular telephones and cosmetics. In these cases, the hot stamp foils are primarily for promotional purposes or aesthetic appeal. Foil stamping is environmentally friendly due to it being a dry process. It does not use solvents or inks and does not create any harmful vapors.
Hot stamping is the process of transferring a very thin coating (typically metallic) onto paper or plastic through a combination of heat and pressure. Hot stamping foils are built up in layers and the foils are processed on a thin film, so the manufacturing skill involved is very complex. Foils start with a carrier film, onto which are placed layers of embossing, metallization, release, protection and an adhesive layer to bond it to the item being protected. If an attempt is made to remove all or part of the layers, this tampering becomes visibly evident.
Foil is an extremely thin polyester film material containing a dry pigment that is transferred to substrate (such as paper) by the use of heat and pressure.
A successful hot stamping job is directly related to the quality of the original artwork. In order to insure the highest quality reproduction of an imprint, the original artwork should be “camera-ready”. The better the artwork at the beginning, the better the imprint reproduction result. The key to a successful hot stamping job is threefold; the first is creating a fixture to support the part firmly under the decorating area. Second, the fixture must also position the part for repeatability of the graphic location. And third, the fixture must allow the operator to easily load and unload the part from the fixture.
